Stories feel temporary, but they follow precise privacy rules, and knowing them changes what you post, what you view, and what you expect others to see. Here is the complete picture as of 2026.
The basics: what a story is
- A story lives on your profile for 24 hours, then disappears from public view.
- You can pin stories to highlights, which stay on your profile until you remove them.
- Who can see your story depends on your account type and per-story settings, not one global rule.

Every privacy control you have
- Hide story from: story settings → “Hide story from” → pick specific accounts. They simply never see that story.
- Close Friends: build a small list and share some stories only with it. The green ring tells them it was exclusive.
- Private account: the nuclear option: everything you post, including stories, becomes visible only to approved followers.
- Message replies: choose who can reply to your stories (everyone, followers, close friends, or off).
- Sharing and remixing: control whether others can share your story as a message or remix it.
- Highlights: even after 24 hours, you decide whether the story gets saved to a highlight, and you can remove highlights any time.
The viewer list, precisely
For 24 hours after posting, you can open your story and see every account that viewed it, and for another 48 hours after it expires, the list remains in your archive. Nobody else sees this list; it is the story owner's private information.
Important consequence: a public story is visible to anyone, including people who never follow you and tools that fetch it anonymously. If you post to a public account, assume the entire internet can see it, because it can.
Common myths, debunked
- “Instagram notifies you when someone screenshots your story.” False. Screenshot notifications were removed in 2018 and have not returned.
- “You can see who viewed your profile.” False. Instagram shows story viewers, not profile visitors.
- “Blocked accounts can still see your stories.” False. Blocked accounts lose access entirely.
- “Third-party tools can bypass private settings.” False. Private means private. Tools claiming otherwise are scams.
The one rule to remember: public story = visible to everyone, potentially forever (via highlights, screenshots, or third-party tools). Private account = visible only to people you approved. Everything else is detail.
